Our Schools

The Newport Public School system serves approximately 2,300 students from pre-K through grade 12.  There are currently 5 elementary schools, a middle school, a high school, a career and technical center, an adult education program, and an after-hours Community School, employing approximately 250 teachers.  The school population is contracting.   Projections estimate that there will be approximately 1,800 students in 2010 if the current trend continues.
In 2001, the Rhode Island Department of Education classified six of Newport’s public schools as “low performing/not improving” under national No Child Left Behind Act standards. Since then we have made significant progress. Two of our schools are now “high performing”, two are “moderately performing” and initiatives are underway to help ALL students perform at or ABOVE “the standard” by 2014.

Despite its reputation as a city of wealth, Newport is a diverse, urban school district.  Based on the 2007 Rhode Island Kids Count Factbook and recent RI Department of Education reports:
  • 24% of Newport children live below the federal poverty threshold (5th in RI)
  • 47% of Newport students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunches (4th in RI)
  • 44% of Newport school children live in single-parent households (4th in RI)
  • 33% of Newport school children represent minorities
  • 26% of our students are in special education, one of the highest percentages in RI
  • 15 of every 1000 children in Newport have an incarcerated parent (6th in RI)
